We discovered everything about the technique of blown glass

Glass objects have always held great importance from both an artistic and functional perspective. They remain essential today, as due to their beauty and practicality, they have found no rival. We learned all about blown glass – what it is, its function, and how at García Requejo, we have managed to combine art, lighting, and craftsmanship to create collections of blown glass lamps.

What is handcrafted blown glass?

When we talk about blown glass, we refer to an ancient technique that has evolved over time while maintaining the artisanal work that goes into creating each piece, making it unique and extraordinarily beautiful.

Although it is now possible to do this work using machines, at García Requejo we embrace tradition and rely on expert hands to work the glass in such a way as to give it “life,” producing exclusive pieces. This is a meticulous process in which, through blowing and injecting air through a metal tube, interior bubbles are generated in the glass to shape it. Subsequently, using various tools, the final piece is obtained, having been created exclusively by hand and resulting in a unique and exclusive item.

Handcrafted blown glass is a centuries-old technique that has evolved over time, while maintaining the artisanal work that goes into creating each piece, making it unique and exceptionally beautiful.

Although it is possible to produce blown glass using machines nowadays, at García Requejo we value tradition and rely on skilled hands to work the glass in such a way that it comes to life, resulting in exclusive pieces. This meticulous process involves blowing and injecting air through a metal tube to create interior bubbles in the glass and give it shape. Afterwards, using various tools, the final piece is obtained through entirely manual work, resulting in a unique and exclusive element.

In the production of a blown glass lamp, there are four main stages: heating, blowing, where the piece is given its initial shape; contouring, where the piece is defined creatively with the help of different instruments; and tempering, where the piece is put back into the oven to harden. All of these stages require skilled artisan hands, like those at García Requejo.

Blown glass can be used in a variety of ways in decoration, creating unique works of art. From vases to lamps with a wide variety of designs, there is something for everyone. There are baroque-style lamps, which continue to have a large following in the world of decoration, as well as more minimalist styles and lamps of various shapes suspended from the ceiling.

Blown glass lamps have a long history behind them, which has turned them into true gems in any environment, especially when elegance and beauty are desired. That’s why it’s not surprising that these pieces made through blown glass are present in the most impressive spaces of large hotels and restaurants throughout the world.

In this field, the crystal or blown glass lamps crafted by García Requejo show constant evolution, adapting to the needs of each customer and combining tradition and innovation in their creation. A tradition that is based on artisanal work, putting into practice the ancient technique of blown glass, in order to create each one of them with attention to the smallest detail and avoiding mass production. As a result, we obtain blown glass lamps in which we also value innovation in designs and finishes to achieve ethereal and magical pieces, among many others.

arum lily collection

Now that we’re talking about magical lamps, we can’t forget to mention García Requejo’s new Arum Lily Collection, inspired by nature and the simplicity of Calla Lilies, whose shapes create pieces full of character and identity. This is an artisanal work achieved through blown glass that reflects the minimalism and delicacy of this collection.

The choice of glass as the raw material for this collection was made because it allowed us to easily achieve these organic shapes, as well as being a 100% recyclable material. In addition, new designs for wall lamps, table lamps, etc. are being developed based on the Calla Lily, which will soon be unveiled.

This piece, designed with an integrated lighting system, can be installed in both indoor and outdoor spaces in various ways: from a floral aesthetic for garden design to part of a composition for the creation of lamps and luminous scenes.

In short, blown glass is an ancestral technique that, as we can see, continues to create beautiful pieces in the world of decoration. Let’s bet on craftsmanship!
